Tulsa restaurant grand opening offers free food for a year

If the early bird gets the worm, then 20 Sonic restaurant customers are ready for free food for a year.

Customers started lining up Tuesday at a new Sonic drive-in that opened at 6 a.m. today at 81st and Highway 75.

"Some people are asleep in the back of a pickup truck. Others are just talking, waiting for the store to open," said News On 6 photojournalist Gary Kruse.

He tells us that one of the customers who was in line at 3 a.m. Wednesday is an art student.

"She even took time to draw a Sonic with chalk on the pavement. Others had their children there, asleep in their vehicles."

Kruse also says that after most of the early birds received a text message late Tuesday afternoon, they went directly to the new restaurant location to take their place in a stall so that they could be eligible for a year's worth of free french fries, hamburgers and drinks.
