Tulsa child is first patient to receive new hearing gift

A child's laugh is the sound every mother wants to hear.

Yet when Dr. Jacque Scholl and her family adopted Jayde out of China back in December, they knew it wouldn't be all laughs, because the child hadn't heard sound her whole life.

"She was born with no hearing," Scholl says.  "There was absolutely no hearing on the radar."

Jayde was quickly given a hearing device, but with multiple pieces and a cord, it could be challenging at times.

"It wouldn't stay on her head," Scholl says.

On Tuesday that all changed.  Jayde is the first patient in the country to receive the MED-EL-RONDO hearing device.  The device has just one piece and will make Jayde's goal of hearing perfectly that much easier.

"Amazing technology to be able to give a child who has had no hearing, hear at normal levels," Scholl says.  "As a mother, it has been an amazing journey to watch all of this."

As for Jayde, you can tell she's excited to get her new hearing device.  Every time she would put it on her head, a big smile came over her face.
