Truck spills rendered animal guts on busy roadway

The smelly situation began just before 8:00 a.m. this morning when a truck from a local rendering plant lost its load. Yes, the load was dead animal parts and guts.

"I’ve never seen anything like it" Owasso PD's Randy Cunningham told KRMG news.

When we asked Cunningham what he observed he said "workers with gloves picking up large sections of animal intestines with stringy stuff coming off of it."

Ewwwwww.

The problem was not just messy, it was smelly. "You may want to stay in your car" he chuckled as we drove onto the scene.

The guts spread over the outside two lanes of highway 196 southbound at the 96st street north exit backing up traffic for nearly two miles.

"This will take a while to clean up" Cunningham said as he talked to the Owasso fire department about the best way to handle the mess.

After the big chunks were collected Owasso FD poured soda ash on the remains to try and absorb the grease. ODOT instructed the workers to avoid using water because it would make matters worse and spread the slick stuff.

Crews were also considering a large quantity of dish detergent to cut the grease as they tried to clean the area.
