Authorities say a tornado has killed one perspon and injured at least six more in the small northeastern Oklahoma town of Quapaw. The city is twenty minutes from Joplin, Missouri where a huge EF5 destroyed hundreds of homes and killed 162 people just over two years ago.
Ottawa County sheriff's dispatcher Colleen Thompson says the twister hit the community near Oklahoma's borders with Kansas and Missouri at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Earlier reports listed two as dead but that changed overnight.
She says the extent of the damage is still unknown. There are reports of the fire station taking a hit and more damage on the northern end of the town.
There were also reports of a twister near Baxter Springs, Kansas but so far, no injuries have been reported there.
Several tornados were reportedly spun off from a large storm front moving through the Midwest and South.
