It seemed like a good idea at the time they said. Fueled by a rather large amount of alcohol and a short portion of judgment, some friends purchased the 10 foot long snake from a man in a van.
Dwayne Matthews' attorney told the Coventry Telegraph. "In his wisdom, and no doubt egged on by his inebriated friends," Matthews bought the python with the intention of re-selling it.
All was fine until the next morning. Waking up in a bit of a fog the man walked into a room where his friend was sleeping.
He was shocked to see the African rock snake coiled to strike and "rearing up at (the friend) in an S-shape, its jaws open like a cobra," the lawyer explained. Thinking quickly Matthews grabbed a blanket and threw it over the snake.
He was then able to get it back into a holding tank without anyone being hurt.
Here’s the kicker. The snake was stolen and when Mathews tried to sell it to a local pet store he was surprised to find himself under arrest.
He ended up with a two month jail sentence for receiving stolen goods.
His attorney says he did the right thing because "he didn’t decide to get rid of it by dumping it in a bin, he was doing the best he could to remedy the situation."
