The man who made Nintendo has died

His name was Hiroshi Yamauchi and he ran Nintendo from 1949 until 2002.
He was known for taking the company that was founded in 1889 from a manufacturer of playing cards to the most influential video game and console maker of it’s time.
Yamauchi was known as a somewhat offbeat but brilliant executive with a raspy voice and informal nature.
He’s also credited with the creation of many of the company’s games and the GameBoy portable.
Showing his unusual personality, Yamauchi also owned the Seattle Mariners for several years.
He didn’t buy the team as an investment or as a fan but because there was a threat they would move to Florida.
So he got out his checkbook and became an owner. He later sold the team to the US branch of Nintendo in 2004.
The Yamauchi family didn’t give many details other than to say he died at a hospital in central Japan from complications of pneumonia.
There will be a funeral service at Nintendo on Sunday.
