16-year old Aubrey Peters was with friends, including Jacob McDaniel Sunday night.
McDaniel was showing his gun collection when he asked Aubrey to hold one of the weapons. Court papers show when she said “no” McDaniel took the magazine out of the gun, pointed it at Peters and pulled the trigger.
There was still a bullet in the chamber, it hit Peters in the chest, killing her.
An affidavit shows one of the people in the room said "Aubrey clutched her chest and said, 'What just happened?'"
The Indianapolis Star reports McDaniel tried to convince two others in the room to claim the gun fell off a table and went off when it hit the floor.
Cops discovered the truth and McDaniel was charged with pointing a firearm and reckless homicide in the shooting.
Peters was a local hero in her town. When she was 13 years old Peters was honored by the Red Cross for saving the lives of a pair of young sisters who had fallen through ice on a reservoir.
"She stood out, they always do when they're younger," a Red Cross Spokesman told CBS.
"Any time there is a senseless death, it just breaks your heart."
