In the propaganda video released by the Taliban, the dog is seen wearing a harness that appears to be similar to ones coalition forces dogs currently in use in Afghanistan.
US officials say they are looking into the claims that the dog was taken during a nighttime raid in late December.
According to the United States War Dog Association, dogs have (officially) been used by US forces since World War II for a variety of tasks including detection, scouting, tracking, and protection.
The militants claim the dog was also wearing a GPS device, a flashlight, and a small camera when captured.
There is no word on what the days ahead may hold for the captured K-9, as dogs are considered “unclean” by Afghans.
