TULSA - Owasso police evacuated a large apartment complex after a possible pipe bomb was found in a dumpster, but the Tulsa Police Bomb Squad soon determined the device was not actually a bomb.
Owasso Police Lt. Nick Boatman tells KRMG the call came in just before 7:00 a.m. Friday.
A resident had spotted the possible device in the dumpster and called 911.
Owasso officers checked the dumpster, and confirmed the presence of a possible pipe bomb.
At that point, six 14-unit buildings were evacuated, with the occupants being assembled at the community room.
The Tulsa Police Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene to investigate, and if necessary, to dismantle or remove the device.
They determined it was actually an "improvised launching device," something like a mortar tube used to launch fireworks.
There were no accelerants present, and the device was not explosive.
Residents were allowed to return to their apartments at about 9:00 a.m.
