When the dark figure first came toward Jeff Horton and his surfboard, he wasn’t worried.
“I was just looking around for a wave and I look down and see what I thought was a sting ray,” he told Fox News.
But it turned out to be a tiger shark and Horton said it meant business. "It came up on me and I jerked my foot and kicked it a couple of times. It went for the bite and missed my leg."
Then the shark began chomping on Horton’s surfboard, knocking him into the water.
Jeff is a former boxer and that training quickly took over.
"I rolled to the top of the shark and punched it in the mouth and got one shot in the eye," Horton began. “I thought I was going to die unless I put up the best fight I ever had.”
The surprised shark released the board but followed as Jeff to paddled to shore. “I saw the shadow of its belly following me underneath.”
The animal didn’t attack again and Horton made it to dry land where a tourist handed him a $50 bill and told him to buy some hooch.
Jeff’s says the board and its shark bite imprint are going on his wall as a trophy.
