Study reveals the most and least religious cities in America

The poll comes from the Gallup organization and is based on a specific question.

They asked people if faith was an important part of their lives and based the results on the percentage of those who said yes or no.

The winner for most religious goes to the city that Brigham Young University calls home, Provo Utah,

The city that answered no more than any other was Burlington, Vermont. See the lists below.

  • Most religious: Provo-Orem, Utah (77%); Montgomery, Alabama (64); Jackson, Mississippi (64); Birmingham, Alabama (56); tied at 55 are Huntsville, Alabama; Holland, Michigan; Greenville, South Carolina; Augusta, Georgia; and Ogden, Utah.
  • Least religious: Burlington, Vermont, (17); Boulder, Colorado (17); Manchester, New Hampshire (22); Portland, Maine (22); and Santa Rosa, California (23).

Overall 40% of Americans describe themselves as "very religious."

31% say they are non-religious.
