Spirit AeroSystems announces layoffs in Oklahoma, Kansas

Spirit AeroSystems announced Thursday morning 360 employees in Oklahoma and Kansas will be receiving layoff notices.

BJ Moore represents the union out of Kansas and says they didn't see the layoffs coming.

"Management sat here and told us they were sending a message to the employees," Moore says.  "I don't know if it's fear tactics or down-sizing."

KRMG reached out to Spirit AeroSystems and a spokesperson says they won't release how many Oklahoma employees are now searching for work.

Moore says the union wasn't told the breakdown either.  He does know of at least 200 people in Kansas so far who have lost their jobs this morning.

A company spokespersons says the layoffs are necessary.

"Today's action is a strategic move to make the company more competitive in a cost-sensitive environment, and results from an ongoing workforce assessment designed to reduce overhead costs, increase efficiency and drive improved performance," a company spokesperson says on their website.
