The woman was body boarding with family members near Melbourne Beach when the attack happened.
“It was just out of nowhere, bam," the woman’s brother Rick Tatsch said.
"She looked OK. She was fading in and out a little bit because when you're losing a lot of blood like that you seem to feel a little faint at that time," he told WKMG.
WDBO in Orlando reports the victim was conscious while being taken to a hospital by ambulance with a “chunk” out of her thigh.
She simply described the shark as being “big.”
Rick Tatsch lamented, "you always hear that you have a better chance to get struck by lightning or winning the lottery and go figure it's the shark bite that comes first.”
However, he said the family kept their sense of humor, “I was telling her, 'maybe we can win the lotto tonight.'"
It’s the second shark bite in the area in the past few days. A woman in Jacksonville required 21 stitches after she was bitten on the foot while wading.
