For the third time in three weeks there has been a shark attack in Maui, this time it cost a woman her arm.
Witnesses say the 20 year old German tourist was snorkeling near Palauea Beach in Mākena when the incident happened.
“We heard screaming from the water and it was this unbelievable scream like I’ve never heard before,” one person told Mauinow.com.
It took nearly ten minutes for rescue swimmers to get the woman out of the water and into medical care. Those who watched say it looked like she had a bite mark on at least one foot as well.
The attack took place around 150 feet from shore in windy conditions, workers aren’t sure what kind of shark bit the woman.
Beaches were closed a mile in each direction from the attack as workers patrolled the area looking for large predators.
The woman was reported to be in critical condition at a Maui hospital.
