Senate votes to allow Bill of Rights monument at the state Capitol

The Senate adopted the resolution last Thursday authorizing the Capitol Preservation Commission to place the monument on the Capitol grounds.

The bill is backed by an Arizona group dedicated to erecting similar monuments to the U.S. Bill of Rights all around the country.

The Republican-controlled Oklahoma Legislature authorized a privately funded Ten Commandments monument at the Capitol in 2009. It was placed on the north steps of the building last year. The American Civil Liberties Union has sued to have it removed.

The ACLU says if one religion can be displayed, all others should be allowed too.

Work is already underway on the statue of Satan that the Satanic Temple hopes to display on the steps of Oklahoma’s Capitol.

The measure to allow the Bill of Rights monument now moves on to the House for consideration.
