Tulsa, Okla. - There were many tense moments at this morning's fire at the Barnard Elementary building that could be heard during the radio calls between the firefighters and their company commanders.
During the early part of the firefighting operation, a "Mayday" call went out over the radio followed by static.
"Whatever company called Mayday, can you repeat..?" asked one commander, but his request was met with silence.
The company did eventually respond, and a few minutes later, there was another transmission that indicated several firefighters had been hurt.
"Safety command, it appears we have everybody out right now," an unidentified firefighter could be heard saying. "We have about three, four burns. Go ahead and get EMSA started."
There was an understandable amount of chaos during such a huge firefighting effort, as commanders at times would struggle briefly with determining the location and condition of some firefighters.
