Rule proposed to make airlines disclose hidden fees

The measure is being pushed by the Transportation Department in hopes of helping end passenger confusion.

Currently, airlines only have to display bag fees, and that price doesn’t have to be exact.

The new rule would require the listing of costs associated with assigned seats, carry-on or checked bags, booking fees, etc.

"A customer can buy a ticket for $200 and find themselves with a hidden $100 baggage fee," Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx pointed out. “They might have turned down a $250 ticket with no baggage fee, but the customer was never able to make that choice,” he concluded.

Foxx believes the rules will add to the public’s ability to “make better travel choices.”

It's hoped changes can be implemented in the next 12 months.
