Academy Award Winner Robert Redford has been tapped to play the late Oral Roberts in an upcoming movie about the world of evangelical ministers.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the film, Come Sunday, is being directed by Jonathan Demme and chronicles the true story of renowned Tulsa minister Carlton Pearson, who was mentored by Oral Roberts while attending ORU.
Pearson, who is expected to be played by Jeffrey Wright, is known for his public declaration in the early 2000s that he didn’t believe hell existed.
Shortly after, Pearson lost much of his influence over his church.
Roberts, an Oklahoma native, died December 15, 2009 of complications from pneumonia in Newport Beach, Calif.
He founded Oral Roberts University in 1963, serving first as its president, then later as its chancellor.
The film is based on a ‘This American Life’ radio broadcast that aired in 2005.
Producers plan to start the project in early 2015.
