It may seem like an extension of a Bruce Willis movie but the United States seems pretty serious about the idea.
The plan would be to use a spaceships robotic arm to “catch” an asteroid with a large net and then get it close enough to earth orbit so that astronauts could land on it.
The idea was cooked up by the Keck Institute, who assured everyone they would try to find a small asteroid, maybe 1.1 million pounds or so.
The President’s latest budget is said to slide $100 million toward NASA to give it a try.
While that may sound like a lot the institute says the entire thing would cost a LOT more, about $2.65 billion in total.
Those in favor say they would use the data gathered for many things including finding a way to avoid asteroids on a collision courses with Earth.
