A woman whose husband had an apparent heart attack while driving and a police officer in training who saw the ensuing wreck both acted quickly to try to save a man's life.
Unfortunately, the man later died at the hospital.
Police identify him as Jimmie Weaver, 66.
It happened about 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of E. 71st St. and S. Riverside Dr.
The man was westbound, approaching the intersection, when he suffered an apparent heart attack or seizure, police at the scene told KRMG.
The vehicle swerved left, into the oncoming lanes of traffic.
His wife grabbed the steering wheel from the passenger seat and jerked the vehicle back to the right.
It continued west through the intersection, then slammed into the concrete barrier just west of Riverside Drive.
A police officer in training, Kendall Jobe, saw the wreck happen, and immediately pulled over to assist, Sgt. Rex Mann told KRMG.
He began chest compressions until EMSA arrived to transport the man to St. Francis Hospital.
Sgt. Mann said he was in critical condition when transported, but still alive.
He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The wife suffered a leg injury but was not seriously hurt.
No other vehicles were involved.
