Protect your plants from freezing temperatures

To make it easy, plants that can be covered should be.

KRMG’s Alan Storjohann says to use a cardboard box or a large plastic container to cover plants that are just blooming. Storjohann says larger shrubs and small trees should be covered with a large tarp or blanket. Then weight the blanket down with bricks or rocks.

FOX23 Chief Meteorologist says the temperatures tonight could get down to 27 degrees. That will be a big problem for commercial fruit growers.

“Those folks are going to be running sprinklers through the night to try to minimize the freeze damage on the developing fruit in their orchards.” Storjohann said.

He continued, “The water will coat those buds and the developing fruit. As it freezes it gives off enough heat to protect the fruit from damage.”

Anything colder than what we’ll see tonight could easily kill off 90 percent of the crop.
