President Barack Obama just announced a $500 million package aimed at reducing gun violence, a month after a mass shooting in Connecticut that killed 20 elementary school children.
The President said he will push for a new ban on military style guns.
He also wants a limit on magazine capacity, tougher background checks, a ban on armor-piercing ammo and additional steps without congressional action.
A call for more officers was also made during the speech that started just before 11:00 Wednesday morning.
He didn't specify how to pay for the new officers.
Hearings on gun safety proposals will begin in two weeks for lawmakers in Washington D.C.
