The student pilot was practicing when a malfunction thrust him out of the cockpit and into a 2,500 foot fall.
The plane went into a sudden nose dive and the canopy flew off. Neither the student nor the instructor were wearing seatbelts and the force of the dive forced the student out of the cockpit.
The instructor was able to hang on even after the canopy flew away and was able to recover and land the plane safely.
The student was an experienced pilot but had wanted to brush up on more skills.
The student had bought the plane, a Zodiac 601XL and then built it from a kit.
The body of the pilot was found east of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
