TULSA, Okla. - Mulch that could potentially have plastic pieces or roofing materials in it is keeping kids from playing at a pair of Tulsa parks.
The playground at Hunter Park and the swings Helmerich Park have been closed since last week and will remain closed until further notice.
The city is waiting on results from the Department of Environmental Quality before proceeding.
Parks officials confirm that March’s Mulch, a contractor of the Parks and Recreation Department, recently delivered a new batch of mulch that was only used in Helmerich and Hunter parks.
“After hearing reports from other cities that March’s Mulch may have other materials included in their mulch, the Tulsa Parks and Recreation Department is taking a proactive approach by closing sections of Helmerich and Hunter parks temporarily,” Lucy Dolman, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department said.
Michelle Allen, a spokesperson for the City of Tulsa, tells KRMG, "Rather than remove the mulch, store it (and avoid contamination with good mulch) then dispose of it, the Parks Department determined that this would be the best way to handle the situation."
Allen says March’s Mulch will be taking care of all the charges associated with the removal and disposal.
