Operator error or mechanical failure: We still don't know why truck smashed into IDL bridge

As crews work on a plan to fix the southwest leg of the IDL after a truck crashed into a bridge above Third Street, several questions remain unanswered.

First, why did it happen?

Was it human error or mechanical failure that led a truck with a hydraulic lift to strike the bridge.

A beam that helps support the bridge sustained significant damage.

The truck belonged to Smithey Environmental Services.  KRMG called the company and asked whether the driver was still employed there.

A company representative said 'right now nothing's changed and we're still investigating what happened.’

He declined to elaborate.

The company's website says, “With our extensive 30 year history in the scrap recycling business, Smithey Environmental has pioneered how waste and freight is transported with our extensive inventory of containers as well as specialty dump trailers to fit any application.”
