In 2009 the Oklahoma legislature approved the placement of a privately funded 10 Commandments monument on the grounds of the capitol.
That decision more than likely opened the door for a Satanist group to pay for a monument that they want to see placed on state grounds as well.
The Satanic Temple from New York has contacted the Capitol Preservation Commission saying they plan on donating the work.
Lucien Greaves spoke on behalf of the group in a letter to the state. "We believe that all monuments should be in good taste and consistent with community standards," she wrote. "Our proposed monument, as an homage to the historic/literary Satan, will certainly abide by these guidelines."
Put more simply, the Satanists are saying if one religion gets a monument, then you have to grant the same access to others as well.
The group has promised to deliver several design options including an interactive portion aimed at children.
Not everyone sees the Satanist group as a church.
Republican Rep. Bobby Cleveland from Slaughterville told The Huffington Post "I think these Satanists are a different group, you put them under the nut category."
Brady Henderson is with the ACLU in Oklahoma, he commented “if the Ten Commandments, with its overtly Christian message, are allowed to stay at the Capitol, the Satanic Temple's proposed monument cannot be rejected because of its different religious viewpoint."
