MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Scamming old ladies out of their life savings is sending one Oklahoma man to prison.
42-year-old Duane Davis pleaded guilty to fraud after selling oil wells to some seasoned citizens.
Assistant US Attorney Ryan Roberts tells KRMG that it takes a certain kind of person to pull off a crime like this one. Roberts says, "They'd probably put him along the lines of vile and devil. I can't disagree with that."
Roberts says Davis claimed he had land and mineral rights to property in eastern Oklahoma and said he had oil wells for the victims to invest in.
Prosecutors don't know exactly how much Davis was able to steal but the FBI puts the number at around $300,000.
Roberts says scams like this can happen to anyone. Roberts says, "She's a retired CPA with a degree from Stanford. She's a really sharp lady."
One of the victims, Roberts says, lost everything and is now living with her daughter.
Davis will likely be sentenced to 4 to 6 years in prison.
