NSA now accused of spying on Vatican

Jorge Mario Bergoglio is now Pope Francis but before he was chosen as the Pontiff he was spied on by the NSA.

The current Pope and the others in the running for the job were all checked out as the conclave was going on.

“It is feared that the great American ear continued to tap prelates' conversations up to the eve of the conclave," said Panorama magazine.

The website Cryptome claims the agency listened in on as many as 46 million phone calls in Italy during December and January.

Reports say the it’s believed even before Pope Benedict's resignation the US was spying on the Vatican.

The Telegraph points out there isn't any solid evidence of the deeds but with recent findings about the NSA's "ears" it's not hard to believe.

WikiLeaks has documents showing the agency had a long standing interest in Bergoglio that began in 2005.

As for the Vatican, they don't seem too worried about it. "We have heard nothing of this and are not worried about it."
