The baby boy was barely alive when he was found Monday afternoon.
Police say the infant’s mother put him in a trash can in the backyard of the home being rented by her family.
The owner of the property was doing maintenance and yard work when he saw blood on the ground. He followed the trail to the garbage can and discovered the child wrapped in bloody blankets.
Neighbor Ouida Neasley told WYFF, "I was upset. I saw the baby after they had pulled it out of the trash can and the fire department got here, and I saw that the baby was moving."
Arrest reports show the baby’s mother, Sharon Ferguson, admitted she “gave birth to the baby, and placed him in a plastic grocery bag and wrapped him in a pink blanket. She then put the child into a trash can in the backyard and willfully abandoned him.”
Ferguson told cops the birth took place birth "on or about April 21."
Emergency crews rushed the boy to the hospital where he's said to be in critical condition, but improving.
Fox Carolina reports Ferguson was arrested and charged with attempted murder and child abandonment.
She remains in a Greenville, South Carolina jail today with bond set at $125,000.
