New treaty commits US to help defend South Korea in battle against the North

The mutual defense treaty has been in the works since North Korea fired on the South in 2010.
The New York Times says the treaty states the US will "fight to defend" South Korea if the Korean Peninsula become a war zone. It also lays down several outlines of what may happen if the countries come to war.
The treaty is not part of what’s known as the nuclear umbrella. That agreement says the United States will help in case of a nuclear threat in the area.
The new deal is important because it’s the first time the US has committed to get involved in what has been termed minor skirmishes.
There are still questions surrounding the activation of the treaty such as what would trigger US troops to become involved.
