New patent may offer 'designer' babies

The company is called 23andMe and they want to make it possible to “pick” some of your baby’s traits and physical characteristics.
A patent was just approved for the service that relies on parent and donor DNA and many claim it will lead to “designer babies.”
While some seem excited about what 23andMe call "a fun way" to help predict some of your babies traits others are not amused.
"We believe the patent office made a serious mistake in allowing a patent that includes drop-down menus from which to choose a future child’s traits, could, in theory, be used to boost the chances of a particular sex, as well as hair or eye color, they began,
Some researchers say the technology has a huge upside by being able to predict or even eliminate some diseases.
But the CGS claims the procedure would be "ethically and socially treacherous" because "it could encourage the dangerous idea that science should be used to breed 'better' people."
23andMe counters by saying that wasn’t the goal "nor do we have any plans to do so."
But one expert in biotechnology told the Journal the it should be considered "a shot across the bow, signal to the world that this is what the future is going to look like."
