TULSA, Okla. - Community leaders are calling for a multi-million dollar community center to be built at Johnson Park at 61st and Riverside.
Those community leaders believe that having a community center near some apartment complexes known for violence will help reduce crime.
Most recently, four women were gunned down, execution style, in the Fairmont Terrace apartment complex.
Listeners KRMG spoke with have mixed opinions about the proposed community center. Some think it is a great idea. Others tell KRMG that building a community center would be a waste of money and have no impact on crime in the area.
Bob Hendrick with Tulsa Parks tells KRMG that, no matter how noble the idea, there is just no funding to build that community center.
Right now, crews are busy constructing a pair of lacrosse fields at Johnson Park. Hendrick says no tax dollars are being spent on that construction. Private donors are funding that.
Hendrick tells KRMG that there is already a large demand for lacrosse fields in Tulsa. The privately funded fields are expected to bring more games and tournaments to Tulsa.
