The boy’s mother and another caregiver stabbed the young man to death and then tried to kill themselves by overdosing on drugs.
Alex Spourdalakis died but Dorothy Spourdalakis and neighbor Jolanta Agata Skrodzka survived and have been charged with murder after the incident.
Police in Chicago say they have been called to the home on several occasions to help the family get to medical appointments.
"He was big and strong and unwilling to go to the doctor," one officer told the Chicago Tribune. "We had to restrain and hold him down."
Police also said the boy who had severe autism was violent at times.
Dorothy Spourdalakis had cried out for help before. She recorded a video earlier in the year saying her son "needs something simple, in the country, where he can run around, get the treatment that he needs so he can get better."
Cops found notes and papers in the house that described what it was like looking after the boy.
Still, officials confirm the family had offers of help through the years and they turned them all down.
