Mosquito-borne virus causes high fever, intense joint pain

Mosquitoes are responsible for a virus that could take years to run its course.

Federal health officials say they're closely monitoring the outbreak in the Caribbean of a mosquito-borne virus that causes an abrupt onset of high fever and intense joint pain.

There are more than 4,000 confirmed cases of the virus -- chikungunya -- most of them in the French Caribbean islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe and St. Martin.

The illness is rarely fatal, but some people can have joint pains for months to years.
