Man killed in head-on crash with a dump truck

Bixby Police say it all started when a family member called in to report that the man was suicidal.

He was also apparently AWOL from the U.S. Air Force.

Bixby Police found the man and tried to pull him over near 131st and Sheridan, but he didn't stop. He continued eastbound on 131st Street South through Memorial.

About halfway between Memorial and Mingo, the man crashed head-on into a passing dump truck.

Sergeant Andy Choate says after taking statements from the dump truck driver and other officers, he believes the man crashed on purpose.

“He accelerated to a high rate of speed and went into the oncoming lanes.” Choate said.

No one else was hurt in the crash, though a Bixby police officer crashed into the back side of that dump truck after the sudden stop. The officer was not hurt.

Some people on the scene reported an explosion sound after the crash. Bixby Police say that was the fuel in the car igniting from the impact.

The man’s name has not been released.
