Man drowns in boating accident on Claremore Lake

A Claremore man home on leave from the military drowned in a boating accident on Claremore Lake on Thursday.

19-year old Jonathan McClure and Sheldon Mashburn were thrown into the lake when the steering mechanism failed on their fishing boat.

"Another fisherman in a separate boat and picked one of the young men up and the other (man) had already gone under (in 12 feet of water)," Rogers County Sheriff's Lieutenant Robert Norman said.

After the accident happened, the motor on the boat kept the boat circling in the water.
Several law enforcement agencies "started searching the lake once the boat ran out of fuel. It was just too dangerous to get around that boat when it was running with (a) wide open throttle."
We're told Mashburn was rescued, but McClure's body was recovered later.
Mashburn was taken to a hospital.
