Tulsa, Okla. - Some are saying race could be an issue in the upcoming GOP showdown between James Lankford and T.W. Shannon to take over the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Tom Coburn.
Oklahoma's Indian tribes have been giving lots of campaign money to Shannon, who's both black and Native American.
Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole, himself a Chickasaw Indian, told the New York Times that Shannon gives Republicans the kind of diversity they need.
"It sort of sends a signal, look, you can be Native American, you can be African American, and you can still be Republican and a very conservative Republican at the same time," Cole said.
Because he's a tribal member, some have questioned Shannon's loyalty to the U.S. Government, which he told the Times is nonsense.
