The South Carolina man who bought the winning ticket was just trying to make his wife happy.
The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said he stopped to get gas at a station in South Carolina.
He was planning to just pump the gas and head home but his wife called and asked him to get hot dog buns.
So he went inside looking for the buns and found out they didn’t have any. While there he saw the sign saying the lottery prize had grown to $400 million, prompting him so buy $20 worth of tickets.
One of those tickets matched all the numbers and made the couple $400 million richer.
WBTW reports the winner told lottery workers it was only the second time he has ever bought tickets.
The family name won’t be revealed but South Carolina is one of only six states that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
The payout is the fourth largest in the history of the lottery.
