Gunmen open fire on New Orleans Mother's Day parade, multiple injuries reported

The shootings began as the second line parade made its way through the 7th Ward of the city. There have been varying reports of injuries with as few as 12 and as many as 19 being reported. Miraculously no one has died and most of the injures are said to be relatively minor but there are people in surgery as of this writing.

Three people were seen running from the area after the shootings occurred. One of the suspects was described as between 18-22 years old wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

Second-line parades are common in New Orleans. They are more loose interpretations of a parade with people dancing their way down the street and many times there is a brass band following along.

The event was put on by a group called The Original Big 7. They were founded in 1996 at the Saint Bernard housing projects, according to its MySpace page.

The neighborhood where the shooting happened was a mix of low-income and middle-class row houses, some boarded up. As of last year, the neighborhood's population was about 60 percent of its pre-Hurricane Katrina level.

Police in New Orleans promise to make arrests quickly in the case.
