Group wants Brady District name changed, claiming racism

The district is named for one of Tulsa’s founders, Tate Brady.

But the group says he was more than a businessman.

“He was a racist, he was a grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan,” James Johnson claims.

Johnson’s grandmother survived the 1921 Tulsa race riot, something he claims Brady was also involved in.

Johnson has help in his effort from others like Christy Williams who told Fox 23 news the groups just wants one thing.

“We want it renamed.”

Johnson said they have tried to talk about the issue before without any satisfaction.

“I don’t think we’re gonna have any peace until God is at the conference table” he said, sounding frustrated.

To bring more attention to the issue Johnson and his followers say they will organize a protest.

They’ll hold a parade complete with signs and drums all with one thing in mind, keeping people from spending money in the area.

“I won’t spend one red copper penny in the Brady District until they change that name,” he noted.
