The new research says for every hour you spend sitting your risk of colon cancer jumps 8%.
Women saw an even greater jump in their incidence of endometrial cancer at 10%.
The study aggregated results from over 40 previous works with 4 million people.
One of the more fascinating findings has to do with a person’s activity level when they were not sitting.
"The results were independent of physical activity," study leader Dr. Daniela Schmid told LiveScience.
“Showing that sedentary behavior represents a potential cancer risk factor, distinct from physical inactivity," she finished.
Some of the results were not surprising.
"Obesity is a major driver for multiple cancers," Doctor Graham Colditz added.
Schmid suggested ways to fend off the effects of that desk job.
"Instead of calling your colleagues on the phone or sending emails, you may walk down the aisle or take the stairs to reach their office."
