GRAPHIC: Rescuers call dogs abuse "worst ever"

Rescuers say they named the one-year-old Shar Pei Hope, but Miracle may be a better fit.

“We handle a lot of rescue cases,” one of them said. “But this is the worst one ever.”

The animal's owner dumped kerosene all over the dog and then set her on fire. "It's everything you can do to hold back the tears," one worker told WFLA-TV in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Making matters worse, neighbors say the dog couldn’t help itself because it was tied down.

Police in the Arcadia Florida, haven't filed charges yet only because they aren’t sure if the woman did it on purpose. They also want to find out if the owner has mental issues that would prevent her from understanding her actions.

One of the rescue workers is Leigh Sockalosky, said either way, the dog is safe now. “She’ll never have to go back to what she endured, we’ll make sure of that.”

Sockalosky confirmed some treatments may take place in other facilities. “We are going to transfer her to Florida Veterinary Specialist to see if she needs any further treatment, and then she will be transferred back to us.”

For now, costs are being covered by the rescue group but members are attempting to raise money to offset the costs of the treatments needed.
