The answer is yes, a government shutdown will affect you but just how much depends on the services you use.
The mail will still be delivered but you won’t be able to get a passport or visa.
The Military is safe, sort of.
Active duty and “essential” personnel would remain on the job but they wouldn’t be paid. Once a funding bill is in place their checks would begin flowing again and they would be retroactive, meaning they wouldn’t lose a dime.
Veterans are another matter. There could be cuts and/or delays to their health benefits and delays to any money they get from Uncle Sam.
368 National Parks would close along with museums and zoos run by the feds.
Small business loans would grind to a halt and federal housing loans would stop as well.
One issue that can really crimp your style is gun permits. Because the background checks and processing is a government job, they wouldn’t be handed out.
Those are just a few of the highlights, or lowlights of what a government shutdown would mean to you and me.
