‘Gingrich-Santorum 2012’ almost happened

Just before the 2012 Michigan primary, the two candidates agreed to form a “Unity Ticket” in an effort to defeat eventual nominee Mitt Romney.

The two camps thought that their combined ticket would lead to Romney losing his home state, and then he would never regain his status as front-runner.

Bloomberg Businessweek reports that negotiations eventually broke down because the two side could not decide who would be at the top of the ticket – Gingrich or Santorum.

Romney won Michigan by 3 points and would retain his front-runner status for the rest of the campaign.
