Get caught with pot, pay $25 fine

The Washington D.C. City Council voted to get rid of imposing jail time in the nation's capital for people caught with an ounce or less of pot.

That goes for getting caught smoking at home too. The new punishment will be a fine of just $25.

If you’re caught with marijuana in the streets of Washington D.C., you could face a fine of $500 and the possibility of six months in jail. That’s half of the old fine and penalty.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray plans to sign the bill into law, but before it can take effect it must withstand 60 days in Congress, which could result in it being rejected. Supporters feel it is unlikely for it to be shot-down in that period.
