Five shot at gathering in east Tulsa

Gunfire threw a large celebration into chaos and left five people wounded Saturday night in east Tulsa.

It happened about 8:00 p.m. at the Green Country Event Center in the 12000 block of E. 31st St., near Garnett.

Police say 400 people, most members of the Xiong Clan of Hmong, had gathered to celebrate a clan reunion and the upcoming Hmong New Year.

A lone gunman opened fire near the entrance, witnesses at the scene told KRMG.

He hit two people in the torso; three others received gunshot wounds to the arms and legs.

Police Capt. Mike Williams did not have conditions of the victims available when he spoke to KRMG outside the event center.

He said officers recovered a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun at the scene, apparently dropped by the suspect.

A police helicopter was nearby at the time, and quickly responded.

Williams said police found a person of interest, and took him into custody.

He's described as an Asian male, about five feet four inches tall, wearing dark clothing.

One witness, Pa Xiong, told KRMG she heard the gunfire, and at first thought it was firecrackers.

But people began running and screaming, and she knew something had gone terribly wrong.

Police have not released the names of any of the victims, nor the possible suspect.
