The character is Alysia Yeoh and she has been Batgirl’s roommate. Now she’s a lot more.
This month’s issue reveals that Yeoh is (follow us here, this is complicated) Batgirl’s bisexual, transgendered roommate.
The writer of the comic Gail Simone told Wired the number of LGBTQ people she knew made her decision easy.
"It just hit me, why was this so impossible?"
Simone says she sees diversity as “the issue for superhero comics," because the times have changed since the introduction of the base characters was 50 years ago.
Simone called continuing to make the hero's white and straight would make the comics "look like an episode of The Andy Griffith Show for all eternity."
The writer says she won't stop here. Simone wants to bring out another trans character in a different comic in the coming months.
It's time for a trans hero in a mainstream comic," she commented.
