Final day of school may not be affected by lack of snow days

The way the school year is measured has changed "the legislature permitted you to convert to hours so we don't have an exact number of days" Dr. Keith Ballard told KRMG news.

Dr. Ballard is the TPS superintendent, he continued. "While we don't have an exact number of days we do have some flexibility built into that." If there are no days or partial days used for any reason school could be out as early as May 16th but Ballard isn't ready to say that yet.

“Once we’re past all of the opportunities to have weather events then we will set our last day of school.”

Ballard said with the new rules the make the calendar self-sustaining “we’re going to compute those hours as we go and that will take care of itself.”

The district hasn’t always been so lucky. After the storms in 2010 and 2011 they were scrambling to make up time. “We were looking around for every day we could get and we knew we were going to go deep into June.”

For now that isn’t an issue and for every frown because of no snow day there will be a smile this summer when school is let out.

If the weather holds, maybe that will be early.
