English teacher assignment to class: Write suicide notes

Part of English class has always been to write papers but Jessica Barrish may have gone a bit too far.

Barrish, who teaches English to 13 and 14 year olds, asked them to write suicide notes.

The assignment came in May at New York’s exclusive Tony York prep.

The task was not to write a personal suicide note but one from the perspective of a character they had been studying.

The assignment was stated like this. "How would you justify ending your life? What reasons would you give?"

The headmaster of the school claims to have gotten no complaints but the New York Post reports a different story saying one parent called the situation “outrageous.”

The teacher has not been suspended and the school won't comment further.

A similar incident in December resulted in a middle school teacher in France being suspended for asking his students to do the same.
