Dusten Brown announces end of fight over Baby Veronica

In a tearful statement at his attorney's office, Dusten Brown announced Thursday he will stop the legal battle to regain custody of his biological daughter, known to the world as Baby Veronica.

Brown and his daughter are part Cherokee, and the Cherokee Nation weighed in many times on the legal battle between Brown and Matt and Melanie Capobianco, the South Carolina couple who adopted the girl from her biological mother.

After Brown went to South Carolina and reclaimed the girl, they took  their battle to reclaim the girl all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and won at every level -- including at least three jurisdictions in Oklahoma. In the brief statement, Brown addressed his daughter. "Never, ever, for one second doubt how much I love you, how hard I fought for you, or how much you mean to me," he said, choking back tears. "We did everything in our power to keep Veronica home with her family. During this four-year fight to raise my daughter, I had to make many difficult decisions, decisions no father should ever have to make. "The most difficult decision of all was to let Veronica go with Matt and Melanie Capobianco last month, but it was no longer fair to let Veronica be in the middle of the  battle. "It was the love for my daughter that kept me going all this time, but it was also love for my daughter that finally gave me the strength to accept things that are beyond my control. "The time has come for me to let Veronica live a normal childhood that was so desperately needed and deserved, and that means stopping the ongoing litigations here in Oklahoma." He expressed a fervent hope that the Capobiancos would allow him to participate in Veronica's life.
